I offer one-on-one spiritual journey sessions as well as group workshops to support you in deepening your relationship with the Source—the Living Spirit flowing through you and all other parts of nature.
Seeking Spirit through a Spiritual Journey
A spiritual (or shamanic-style) journey is a way of connecting with the allies in nature, both seen and unseen. In a spiritual journey, the seeker receives insight and clarity by connecting with a compassionate Spirit Helper. Spirit Helpers might be animals, trees, birds, plants, or other figures who mediate the wisdom and love of the divine.
For those who gave up on prayer long ago because it felt like talking to empty space, a spiritual journey provides an opportunity to hear Spirit speaking back. During a spiritual journey, you can commune with your own Spirit Helper, who is always ready to convey solid support and fresh perspective for daily life. Journeys use any of the languages of the heart: feeling, sensing, hearing, seeing, speaking. Opening to a warm relationship with your own Spirit Helper is a life-changing path and provides a foundation of loving companionship on which to build your daily experience.

Mentored Spiritual Journey Sessions
If you would like support for engaging in a spiritual journey, I offer mentoring sessions (usually by phone).
If you need guidance on a specific question. You might be seeking clarity on a specific issue or question. You bring your question to a session. During our session I listen meditatively to Living Spirit and convey the particular wisdom that is shared for you. Journey sessions provide a fresh perspective on life’s tangles and offer renewed courage to live from your clear heart. Whatever question you bring, you will receive support for living into your truest calling and your deepest joy. Sessions usually last 50 to 70 minutes. (Single sessions available only after an introductory set of 4 sessions.)
If you want to grow in your ability to journey so that you can develop your relationship with your own Spirit Helper. You might wish to develop your own skill in listening to the quiet voice of your own Spirit Helper. Through a series of individual spiritual journey sessions, you can deepen your ability to perceive your Helper’s wisdom. Opening to Spirit’s guidance and love typically increases people’s confidence and joy in daily life and leads to a deeper understanding of self and purpose. (For listening to your own Helper, a series of 4 sessions is recommended at all times.)
Whatever each person’s particular need, there is more-than-human wisdom available when we pause, ask, and reflect. In a nature-based (or shamanic) spiritual path, the visible and less-visible parts of nature together make up a single reality. To deepen our connection with nature is to deepen our connection with the self and with Spirit at once. Sessions will assist anyone wishing to root their lives more firmly in an everyday nature spirituality.
Why 4 Introductory Sessions?
If we have not worked together before, please schedule a series of four weekly sessions. Spiritual journey sessions are different from both therapy and spiritual direction. They have their own rhythm, tailored by Spirit for each person. A set of four sessions allows each of us to get used to the rhythm that is right for you. Four sessions also provides some time for reflection; it gives you a chance to assimilate new insights and begin to allow them to take root in your life. Change usually doesn’t happen instantly; it grows as we grow. Four sessions over four weeks gives you a bit of growing time.

Personalized Nature Spirituality Retreats
If you are at a crossroads in your life or simply wish to pause for an extended time of reflection, you might choose a personalized, half-day (3 hours) nature retreat. Together you and I will explore what nature is saying to you by spending contemplative time outdoors listening for the greater wisdom. Depending on your needs, a retreat might include hiking, sitting, writing practices, shamanic-style journey sessions, or simple nature-based rituals. Whatever we choose to do together will support your ability to live openly and with equanimity. Deepening one’s connection with trees and land and sky allows one to connect with one’s own deepest nature. It also encourages greater clarity and peacefulness in life.
4 sessions, 1 per week: sliding scale $300–$400 (recommended at the beginning)
One spiritual journey session: $100 (available only after a series of 4 sessions)
Half-day nature retreat (3 hrs): $250

I am a writer and spiritual counselor with a passion for reconnecting people with nature. I received a PhD in religious studies from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and have taught graduate-level environmental humanities, feminist studies, critical thinking, and thesis writing at Prescott College in Prescott, AZ, and Naropa University in Boulder, CO.
Nature advocacy started for me in Oakland, where I founded a small nonprofit land trust to preserve a nearby creek. I have cleaned and restored urban creeks, fed baby birds in wildlife rehab, and cofounded a local rights-of-nature group. Today I connect with nature through birdwatching, hiking, swimming, and listening to Nature-Spirit-Source in quiet meditation.
My second book, Tamed by a Bear: Coming Home to Nature-Spirit-Self, was published by Counterpoint Press in July 2017 and is now available in paperback. Kissed by a Fox: And Other Stories of Friendship in Nature (Counterpoint, 2012) received the WILLA Award for Creative Nonfiction. I live near the sea in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest with my partner, Tim, and our dog, Bodhi.
